Basavanagudi — an area planned by Standish Lee, a well-known British town planner — is a heritage locality that still has remnants of old English bungalows and large circles that are evident in the vicinity. Gandhi Bazaar, a famous bazaar in Bangalore, now stands on what used to be Karanji tank. This neighbourhood takes its name from Basava meaning bull and Gudi which means temple.
