Panjagutta – the ‘X’ Factor of Hyderabad

Posted by

Located at the crossroads of several important localities of Hyderabad, Panjagutta is often an unavoidable junction while one needs to move between several important areas of the city. Buses are easily available from this locality to important residential as well commercial areas such as Banjara Hills, Kukatpally, Tolichowki, Khairatabad, Nizampet as well as the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA).

The area is a mixture of both commercial as well as residential entities. An important as well as famous commercial shopping mall, the Hyderabad Central is located in the area. Sights of children, youngsters as well as the aged looking for autorickshaws, cabs and buses while enjoying ice-creams and chocolate pieces are a common sight. The mall also houses a PVR multiplex which screens English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu movies on a daily basis. Jewellery outlets are also found in plenty here.

Besides, another important aspect of the area is that it has steadily emerged as a medical hub over the past couple of years. Medical tourists from all over India as well as Hyderabad city regularly visit Panjagutta to visit the famous hospitals – the Asian Institute of Gastroenterology and the Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences, popularly known as NIMS to locals. The former medical facility is believed to be one of the best of its kind not only in India, but also the whole of South Asia taken together.

A lot of eateries serving the local delicacy, the Hyderabadi Biryani, is readily available in the area at much subsidised rates compared to areas such as Tolichowki, also known as the food hub of Hyderabad. In fact, it is one of the rarest localities in the city to be providing enthusiasts with free Sahoor, or the pre-dawn meal during the fasting month of Ramadan. A few restaurants specialising in Andhra meals are also present. But if you want to try out the Irani Chai with Osmania biscuits, Panjagutta is definitely not the place.

Boarding an inter-city bus from this locality is a child’s play. One just needs to get down at the Hyderabad Central Mall and simply call the operator for the exact location. Usually boarding points are just opposite the mall. Many shops selling a wide variety of products offer the waiting traveler with opportunities of window shopping.

However, one should remember that this area spells disaster when it rains and can lead to unbelievably stagnant traffic. A flyover constructed in the area to ease congestion has not helped either. Even on normal sunny days, Panjagutta is not where you would try to test your luck by starting late. Almost all important bus operators such as Kesineni Travels, Jabbar Travels, Orange Travel among others ply through this area.
